IPP REVIEW–The Eastern Economic Forum and Russia’s Look East Policy

The Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), Russia’s economic outreach to the world, was held from September 11-13, 2018 and attracted participants from 60 countries. The most notable ones were China (whose President Xi Jinping attended the EEF for the first time in its history) and Japan (whose Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had recently held a high profile bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin). The EEF was held for three years continuously in Russia’s Far Eastern city of Vladivostok. Due to Western sanctions over the Russian annexation of Crimea; long-lasting tensions over Russian support for pro-independence fighters in eastern Ukraine; Russian anger over the promotion of Color Revolutions in its backyard, especially Georgia; and Russian weapons that were allegedly involved in the shooting down of a Malaysian Airlines jetliner that had killed all onboard; Russo-EU ties are strained. Russo-US ties are also strained for the same reason but the US under the Trump administration is keen to reach rapprochement with the Russians. In fact, in his meeting with NATO allies, President Trump pushed hard for the revival of the G-8 (the G-7 plus Russia). President Trump is trying very ...

Everything Apple Announced at WWDC 2019 in Nine Minutes

Where’s the actual keynote video? It doesn’t take that long to remove the boos about the Mac Pro stand… Apple knocked it out of the park with this WWDC. Unlike that snooze fest I/O last month. The sheer volume of complaints here and on other forums is all the proof you need. Nobody complains about a has-been or whoever’s in second place – they only complain about who’s on top. And Apple gave them lots to complain about. Yes, it’s almost Tuesday on the east coast of the U.S. and still no video replay of Monday’s keynote from Apple. I can remember from years and years ago at a WWDC when the video production team at Apple had a session where they claimed that their new video workflow would result in near realtime posting of the WWDC sessions. What happened to that goal or claim? What’s even worse is that Apple’s main site has been showing a full-screen announcement for the keynote video for hours and yet the link leads to a statement that simply says, “…today’s event will be available shortly.” Not much short of the dreaded 404 error. Biggest Trade Company Apple’s Beats brand in April unveiled the Powerbeats Pro, a redesig...

IAB has compiled 35 official images of XPulse 200T to give you its detailed view from all the angles. Cities where you save least money by driving electric car

Not only are they better for the environment due to their absence of carbon emissions, but they can also be cheaper to maintain than a conventional gasoline-powered car. However, the financial benefit of driving an electric car can is different based on where you live. This is mainly due to varying commute times among cities, as well as differences in the cost of gasoline and the cost of electricity, which is different for every city. In 2018, Crescent Electric Supply Company (CESCO) published a study to find out which American cities offered the most financial savings for commuters who went electric. The study analyzed average commute length as well as gas prices and electricity rates in each major city in America. From there, CESCO used this data to calculate annual commute costs for electric and gas vehicles with an EV that used 34 kWh of electricity per 100 miles and a traditional gas-powered car that obtained 30 mpg of fuel economy. Read more: Nissan fixed the biggest problem with the Leaf EV, and now it’s ready to take on Chevy and Tesla. According to the study, commuters in New York would save $55 a year by switching to an electric car. That pales in comparison to ...

Where is James Naismith from? A Canadian town that’s cheering for the Raptors.

ALMONTE, Ontario — The Toronto Raptors opened the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors in a giant vat of deafening noise that made it easy to forget that basketball began as a simple game. Professional basketball’s championship series has become a carefully choreographed and layered spectacle, with dance teams, celebrities, booming soundtracks, light effects and nearly 20,000 screaming spectators combining to scramble the senses. But in a quiet moment before the pandemonium began Thursday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver pointed out that this year’s event marked “a homecoming of sorts.” While Toronto was making its first appearance in the Finals, Silver noted that James Naismith, the sport’s inventor, hailed from Ontario. Basketball’s origin story is a well-told legend: Naismith, then a 30-year-old physical education teacher in Springfield, Mass., nailed peach baskets to the railing of his gym’s gallery, suspending them above the floor, in 1891. His goal was to keep his antsy students occupied during the cold winter months with a less violent sport than football. Naismith’s 13 original rules outlawed pushing, tripping and striking opponents while laying out the basics for ...

‘Ford’s new Expedition SUV is the epitome of American motoring

You probably think the current Range Rover is a big car. But maybe that’s because you haven’t seen the Ford Expedition. The Expedition, so-named because that’s what you have to undertake to walk around it, is Ford’s SUV flagship in North America and not sold in Europe, perhaps because any attempt to drive more than one onto a cargo ship might cause it to sink. It really is very, very big. You know the long-wheelbase Range Rover, a car that in Euro terms always skirts the fringes of unparkable? Well this is five inches longer. There’s also a stretched Expedition Max, and I don’t know how big that is because the person with the tape measure is still on their way towards the back. I’ve been spending some time with the Expedition because I went to the US and wanted to drive something really American. Which means, to quote The Simpsons, a truck that ‘smells like a steak and seats 35’. Although in top-of-the-rack, $73k Platinum spec the Expedition actually seats just eight people, each of them given enough space to enter a cat-whirling contest without troubling the Volvo 245-shaming boot space behind row three. It then wraps all this room in a handsomely high-sided body with a grille ...
