H.E. Fletcher Granite Company LLC, Since 1881, Tradition Etched in Stone

The very earth, what it is and what it holds, has been the literal bedrock of a reputable, solid company since 1881. One of the oldest quarries and fabricators in the country, H.E. Fletcher Granite Co. LLC of Westford, has been mining the stone fruits of Massachusetts for nearly 130 years and counting, an impressive milestone for any industry in any nation of the industrial world. In 1881, 18-year-old Herbert Ellery Fletcher, son of a prominent family in the Chelmsford area, founded his quarry by extracting granite and other stone on the family’s land in Westford, Mass., which was known as West Chelmsford at the time. Robert Fletcher, an ancestor of the family, was one of the first settlers and founders of the Town of Chelmsford in the mid-1600s. According to company archives and historical records, Fletcher also operated a construction business until 1915 and invested in other granite companies and a slate company. He was very active in town government and served as a state representative in the late 1800s and a state senator from 1901 to 1903. When his two sons, Harold and Ralph, returned from World War I, he turned the operations of the company over to them. Fletcher lived to...

Experts reveal the best way to sit at a desk all day

Next step: Verify your email address. Please check your inbox (and spam folder!) to start getting emails Spending hours upon hours a week parked on your butt in front of your desk falls into the same category as spooning yourself an entire carton of ice cream in one sitting or staying up past 3 a.m. on a work night to catch up on The Bachelor: It’s just not all that good for you. And as I write this, I have the sitting-induced hip and leg pain to prove it. But according to pros, there are certain ways you can sit at your desk that are marginally less bad for your than others. Since most people likely don’t have the option of trading in their usual workspace seating for, say, the beachfront lounge chairs I’ve been petitioning for, it’s worth taking their cues for the sake of your own unhappy joints and muscles. “I think the worst three things you can do would be sitting too low, sitting in a chair that’s too soft—which can create compression on the hips and cause groin pain, hip pain, and labral tears—and not having your feet on the floor,” says Dr. Emily Kiberd, a chiropractor and founder of the Urban Wellness Clinic. So first things first: un-cross those legs. “We like to analy...

Pilot reported fuel pump issue before fatal New Mexico crash

SANTA ROSA (AP) — Authorities say the pilot of a small plane that crashed in central New Mexico earlier this month reported an undisclosed fuel pump issue before the aircraft went down, killing both people aboard. The National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary accident report doesn’t list the probable cause of the May 5 crash. Authorities say the twin-engine Beech A60 was flying from Arlington, Texas, to Santa Fe Regional Airport when the pilot radioed about the fuel pump issue and said he was diverting to the nearest airport. The plane crashed into a tree and rock-covered knoll about a mile west of the Santa Rosa Route 66 Airport. The NTSB report says witnesses reported seeing the plane flying low to the ground before crashing and burning.   NISSAN The Los Alamos Monitor is your source for local news, sports, events, and information in Los Alamos County and Los Alamos, NM, and the surrounding area. From painting the nursery to changing a light bulb or hanging holiday lights, everyday life often calls for a ladder. The Little Giant 22-Foot Multi-Use Ladder is our top choice because it allows for safe use up high, in stepladder configuration, and even on the stairs. If you find yourself teetering on top of a chair as you reach for a burned out light bulb, you need to get a ladder. If it’s time to paint a room with a ceiling much taller than seven feet, it’s ladder time. If there are trees to prune, strands of lights to hang, or gutters to be cleaned, then a good ladder is a great idea. Buying a ladder is no time to pinch your pennies. According to the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI), there are more than 164,000 annual emergency room visits caused by ladder falls, and as many as 300 annual deaths from falls off ladders. And we’re not talking about people tumbling down several stories off of huge industrial-grade ladders: Most ladder fall deaths occurred after a d...

Pneumatic Scale Angelus introduces CB100 canning line for craft brewers

April 24, 2018 — Last year at the Brewers Association Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America, PSA debuted its CB50 canning line filler- seamer combo. Breweries such as New Realm Brewing Company, Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project, Market Garden Brewery and Port Orleans Brewing Co. have already installed the CB50 and are producing great canned beer for distribution and onsite sales. Due to demand for a higher-speed version of the CB50, at this year’s Craft Brewers Conference, PSA is introducing the CB100, which is capable of a variable speed range of 30 to 100 cans per minute. One brewery that has already jumped on the chance to purchase a CB100 is Baltimore’s Heavy Seas Beer. “Heavy Seas Beer is experiencing rapid growth for Loose Cannon and other Cannon Crew brands in cans, and we needed a solution that would provide greater speed and high quality,” said Dan Kopman, CEO of Heavy Seas Beer. The CB100 has many of the same features as the CB50, but for a high-speed canning line. The integrated 12-head hygienic inline filler, with proprietary flowmeter technology, helps brewers get a good fill with little waste. The CB100 gas flush systems help keep oxygen out of the ...

These were among favorite boardshorts in our 2019 Summer Buyer’s Guide. For pure toughness, these burly trunks win big, with a cotton-poly material that holds its shape so you don’t wind up with a waistband full of sand. As a bonus, four pockets hold wallet, keys, and other sundries for after-session cervezas. We love the Klettersack for its beautiful, high-quality design. Our tester praised the bag’s bomber construction, writing “the 22-liter pack features 1,000-denier Cordura fabric and heavy duty hardware so it’ll put up with years of day-hike abuse.” Our cycling columnist said he’ll “never go back” to other hitch models after testing the Backstage Swing Away. “It’s no overstatement to say that for truck and van owners, the swing-away design will make life a lot easier,” our tester said. The Dirt Surfer made our list of cool crossover bike gear. “Club Ride added a little bit of spandex to this poly shirt for extra stretch, as well as a UPF 50 rating to give the A...

Mercedes-Benz Celebrates 125 Years of Motorsport on Track

We Can’t Keep It a Secret – Subscribe Today at Huge Savings! Save up to 73% off the cover price. PLUS FREE digital access. Valtteri Bottas flashes me a broad grin as I settle into the passenger seat of a 1980 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL Rallye. As the Finnish Formula 1 driver aims the prow of our coupe towards the start of a smaller handling circuit on the infield of England’s Silverstone racecourse, I share that this is my first ride-along with an active F1 driver. “Firsts for both of us,” he laughs. “I’ve never driven this car.”  Understandable, given that this is the only rally-ready SL Mercedes ever made. Back in the late 1970s, Mercedes-Benz had fashioned a few SLC coupes into off-road machines, but believed that the shorter and more nimble 500 SL would be better at rally dominance. Four such examples were built and Walter Röhrl was tapped as the top driver. But before the start of the 1981 season, Mercedes backed out of rallying, choosing to focus on other race formats. The coupe we’re sitting in is believed to be the last of the four units remaining. Entering the track, Bottas guns the V-8. A shorter axle ratio was engineered to provide more torque off the line and i...

New ghillie suit for Army snipers put to the test – News

An Army sniper wearing the current Flame Resistant Ghillie System is pictured. The new Improved Ghillie System looks to enhance the snipers’ lethality and survivability while being simpler and modular. Some Army snipers are finally getting their eyes and hands on prototypes of the Army’s new ghillie suit in “bench tests” at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. As part of the evaluation exercise, some snipers wore models of the proposed Improved Ghillie System, or IGS, and concealed themselves in forest and arid settings. The other snipers tried to spot them from distances as far away as about 655 feet and as close as about 33 feet. Staff Sgt. Ricky Labistre, a tester and sniper section team leader with 1st Battalion, 160th Infantry Regiment of the California National Guard, said ghillie suits improve a sniper’s ability to remain camouflaged and concealed. “Anytime we can improve our survivability, it is very welcomed,” Labistre said in an Army statement. The evaluation took place for three days in November. The Army plans to buy about 3,500 ghillie suits to outfit the approximately 3,300 snipers in the service, the statement said. The Army is set to replace the current Flame Resist...
