JL Audio Introduces New 8-Inch In-Wall and In-Ceiling Subs

Go shopping for a truly uncompromising high-performance in-wall subwoofer, and you’re going to end up with a very short list of manufacturers. And JL Audio is undeniably on that very short list. But in the past, the cost of its 13.5-inch architectural subs has been an insurmountable barrier to entry for some. Especially those with smaller listening spaces.  The companys’ new 8-inch models, introduced this week, definitely help, especially given that prices start at just $2,300. JL Audio, an innovator in high-end audio solutions, now shipping an 8-inch version of their Fathom IWS in-wall subwoofer systems with additional enclosure option for in-ceiling applications. The new 8-inch Fathom IWS and ICS systems join a previous model, with a 13.5-inch driver, in the Fathom IWS lineup.  ”We are excited about the potential of the 8-inch in-wall and in-ceiling subwoofer solutions in our growing line of architectural audio solutions,” said Andy Oxenhorn, President of JL Audio. “These models have a very small, low-profile grille that will please customers looking for a visually unobtrusive solution that delivers true JL Audio sub-bass performance.” The 8...

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Valutec Wood Dryers, a leading supplier of dry kilns to lumber producers in Europe and Asia, has established a beachhead in the North American market.                 The company, based in Sweden, recently signed an agreement to supply two dry kilns to Pleasant River Lumber, which has four softwood lumber mills in Maine.                 It will be the first installation in North America for Valutec, which began marketing efforts in North America in 2016.                 The kilns are scheduled to be installed at Pleasant River mills in late summer of 2019 and be operational by the end of the season.                 Executives at Pleasant River couldn’t be happier. “We’re incredibly excited to put those in,” said Jason Brochu, who owns Pleasant River with his brother, Chris, and three others. “We feel like we’re going to have the best kilns in North America until the next company puts them in.”                 Pleasant River signed an agreement for two Valutec TC continuous dry kilns for its two spruce sawmills, one in Dover-Foxcroft and the other in Jackman.                 Continuous dry kilns have grown in popularity in the softwood lumber industry in ...

8 Pairs of Workout Shorts That Won’t Chafe or Ride Up

It’s a glorious summer morning and you’re just itching to get out there to start your day with an uplifting jog around the neighborhood. So you grab your favorite sports bra, sneakers and headphones and rush out the door. You feel the wind on your face as your muscles start to loosen up and remember how good it feels to break a sweat. And then your thighs decide to pick a fight with one another, and you’re forced to do a weird sort of crab-walk back home so that the chafing won’t get any worse than it already is.  Don’t let angry thigh chafing get in the way of your glorious summer morning runs (or any workouts, for that matter). Here to help get you through those hot days when you just can’t even with a pair of leggings or capris are eight pairs of shorts that are long enough to prevent chafing and won’t ride up no matter how many miles you’re tackling today. The high-cut waist and ten-inch inseam guarantee nothing will be hanging out or left uncovered. On the flip side, the seamless hem at the legs won’t dig in or ride up, while the numbered sizing (0 through 14) allows you to get closer to a perfect fit than generic small/medium/large sizing ever could. With two deep side po...

Like most right-thinking omnivores, I love a hog roast – insincere apologies to any vegetarians still

Like most right-thinking omnivores, I love a hog roast – insincere apologies to any vegetarians still reading, but I’m rarely happier than when clutching a white roll overflowing with tender meat and crispy fat in my greedy paw. However, at the risk of hitting our national pride right where it hurts (the roast meat department), I prefer the Italian version. It pops up in similar places (“porchetta trucks are fixtures at every festival, fair or sagra – local fete – parked in the middle of the benign pandemonium”, as Rachel Roddy notes in her lovely book Five Quarters: Recipes and Notes from a Kitchen in Rome, while the Giancarlo and Katie Caldesi love it so much “we asked our local butcher to bring his porchetta van to our wedding”) but, while Britain has long had a reputation for plainness in matters meat, porchetta has been given the fancy Italian treatment, stuffed with garlic and herbs, generously salted and served in robustly chewy rolls. If our hog roast is great, I’m afraid theirs is utterly sublime. But, as with many classic Italian recipes, there’s very little agreement on the best way to prepare it – as one desperate reader, appetite whetted by a holiday in Rome, discov...

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on the box. But during a recent trip to the hardware store the longest advertised lifetime I found was 25,000 hours. Others claimed only 7,500 or 15,000 hours. And yes, these are brand-name bulbs from Cree and GE. So, what happened to those 100,000 hour residential LED bulbs? Were the initial estimates just over-optimistic? Was it all marketing hype? Or, did we not know enough about LED aging to predict the true useful life of a bulb? I put these questions to the test. Join me after the break for some background on the light bulb cartel from the days of incandescent bulbs (not a joke, a cartel controlled the life of your bulbs), and for the destruction of some modern LED bulbs to see why the lifetimes are clocking in a lot lower than the original wave of LED replacements. Any discussion of light bulb lifetime would be incomplete without mention of the Phoebus cartel, an international organization formed in 1924 by the world’s leading light bulb manufacturers to manipulate the bulb market. As discussed by Markus Krajewski in “The Great Lightbulb Conspiracy”, the cartel assigned ...

Honeywell has released a new range of Kombi-QM pressure-independent control valves (PICVs) suitable for a wide

Honeywell has released a new range of Kombi-QM pressure-independent control valves (PICVs) suitable for a wide range of hydronic applications in the building services industry. Fan-coil units and chilled beams are probably the most familiar applications of PICVs with the move from 4-port to 2-port valves driven primarily by the need to reduce excessive energy consumption of pumps and thermal losses through pipework. In the selection of 2-port valves for use in variable-flow systems, particular attention is given to some of the issues that can arise in systems where pump speed is designed to change in response to thermal demand. Fluctuations of flow initiated by the positioning of the 2-port valves in response to varying occupancy levels and heat losses causes pressure changes in the system, resulting in instability of flow through all the valves. The system is effectively unbalanced, resulting in the valves ‘hunting’ as they constantly try to maintain control. An unstable system has a direct impact on energy consumption, occupancy comfort, noise and maintenance costs. To ensure accurate temperature control in the occupied spaces of buildings where the system pressure is maintai...
